Algeria Background Screening Guide

Updated 2026-07-13

Algeria’s criminal record process is one of the more streamlined in North Africa — a biometric ID or passport alone is generally enough to request a certificate — backed by a data protection law that requires notification or prior authorization for higher-risk data processing.

National Identity Verification

Algeria issues a biometric Carte Nationale d’Identité, managed through the Direction Générale de la Sûreté Nationale (DGSN). The biometric ID (along with the biometric passport or driver’s license) is the standard identity reference for employment, banking, and government services, and is also the key document used to request a criminal record certificate.

Criminal Record Check

Algeria’s formal criminal-clearance document is the criminal record certificate (Extrait de Casier Judiciaire, Form No. 03), issued through the Ministry of Justice. Notably, it can be requested simply by presenting a biometric national identity card, biometric passport, or biometric driver’s license, without needing to submit additional supporting documentation — a comparatively simple requirement relative to many other markets. Typical turnaround time will be confirmed once Stodacom has processed sufficient volume in-market to report a reliable average.

Employment & Education Verification

Employment history verification is generally workable with established employers in Algiers and other major centers. Education verification is reliable for accredited universities; direct verification with the issuing institution remains the most reliable safeguard against fabricated or inflated credentials.

Data Protection & Consent

Screening in Algeria is governed by Law No. 18-07 on the Protection of Personal Data, enforced by the National Personal Data Protection Authority (ANPDP). Data controllers must notify the ANPDP before beginning processing, and higher-risk activities — including transfers of personal data abroad and large-scale interconnection of databases — require prior authorization. Employers should factor this authorization requirement into planning if screening data will be processed or stored outside Algeria.

Practical Notes for Employers

  • Take advantage of the streamlined criminal record request process — a biometric ID or passport is generally sufficient documentation.
  • Confirm whether cross-border transfer of candidate data requires ANPDP prior authorization for your specific screening arrangement.
  • Verify education credentials directly with the issuing institution rather than relying on presented certificates.
