Ghana Background Screening Guide

Ghana is one of West Africa’s more accessible screening markets, with a national identity card and a police clearance process that, unlike some neighboring markets, can be initiated online even for applicants outside the country.

National Identity Verification

Ghana’s national identity document is the Ghana Card, issued by the National Identification Authority (NIA). It is now widely used as the primary identity reference across government and private-sector transactions, including employment screening, making identity verification comparatively straightforward relative to markets without a single, consolidated national ID.

Criminal Record Check

Ghana’s formal criminal-clearance document is the Police Clearance Certificate, issued by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. Applicants within Ghana can typically expect processing in roughly 5 to 14 working days; applicants applying from abroad — including through Ghana’s diplomatic missions and the Police e-Services platform — should expect 4 to 8 weeks due to international verification and mailing steps.

Employment & Education Verification

Employment history verification is generally reliable with established employers in Accra and other major commercial centers. Education verification is dependable for accredited universities and polytechnics; as with other West African markets, Stodacom recommends direct verification with the issuing institution given the regional prevalence of unaccredited or unrecognized institutions (see the Africa Employment Fraud Report).

Data Protection & Consent

Screening in Ghana is governed by the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843), read together with Article 18(2) of the 1992 Constitution, and enforced by Ghana’s Data Protection Commission. Employers should ensure documented candidate consent is in place before initiating any screening involving Ghanaian nationals.

Practical Notes for Employers

• Applications from abroad take meaningfully longer than in-country applications — plan accordingly for diaspora hires.
• Verify education credentials directly with the issuing institution rather than relying on presented certificates.
